Nyjer

Nyjer® is a high oil content seed, making it an excellent energy source for active birds such as goldfinches, house finches, purple finches and pine siskins. It is important to keep the food fresh for these picky little eaters. Nyjer has a thin shell and is vulnerable to spoilage. Once seed starts to dry out and become stale, finches will turn up their beak for a fresher forage.

Because Nyjer seed is so small, it works best in specially designed feeders. Feeders with tiny ports or fine mesh help prevent seed from spilling onto the ground, which can easily happen with larger feeding holes. Nyjer feeders come in a wide variety of sizes and styles, many featuring bright yellow accents that resemble the vibrant colouring of male goldfinches. Interestingly, studies have shown that goldfinches are especially attracted to the colour yellow, although exactly why remains a bit of a mystery!
